China Travel Fund

Honorary Graduate of the University of Manchester, Dr Lee Kai Hung has generously donated £100,000 to match other charitable gifts, creating a fund to support students and staff who wish to fly to the Chinese speaking world to study languages spoken in China, or conduct research about China or its Chinese language speaking neighbors.

The Manchester China Institute provides small scholarships for students at The University of Manchester to fly to the Chinese-speaking world to study languages spoken there.

Faculty research grants

MCI provides small travel grants for academic staff at The University of Manchester who need to fly to the Chinese-speaking world to conduct research in China studies.

If you wish to apply for an MCI China Travel Scholarship or Grant, please fill out this form and email it together with a one-page CV to mci@manchester.ac.uk with the subject line, ‘MCI China Travel Fund application'.

Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis beginning Monday, 16 March 2021. 

Internship Opportunities

MCI is offering a paid internship for University of Manchester second-year undergraduate students. This is a full-time two-month position in July and August 2021. The closing date for applications is 19 April. Please see the Q-Step website for further details and to apply. 

Pagoda Projects Summer Skills Programme

The Manchester China Institute has partnered with Manchester-based organisation, Pagoda Projects, to fund a small number of UoM students looking to boost their cultural understanding of China and enhance their future employability with the Pagoda Summer Skills Course.

As part of the digitally delivered programme, each UoM student is paired with a student mentor from Greater China. Topics of discussion will be provided throughout the programme to develop a deeper knowledge of China and build a longstanding friendship with a like-minded peer.

These digitally delivered events focus on a variety of sectors, with prominent members providing a unique insight into their working world. There’ll also be a variety of workshops and webinars, all with the aim of improving future employability prospects and intercultural awareness. Find out more and apply here.
